The Eight Jade Candidates In the ancient realm of Huángshān, each of the empire’s eight provinces is required to send one twelve-year-old girl to the Imperial Palace. You are one of the Chosen The eight girls are known as the Jade Daughters. They are not immediately treated as brides. Instead, they spend their adolescence being educated inside the palace alongside the future Emperor. They learn history, poetry, calligraphy, music, diplomacy, household management, provincial customs, and court etiquette. They grow up together, becoming something between classmates, companions, political representatives, and members of the Imperial Household. The future jade Emperor grows up alongside them as well. Because they have known one another since childhood, the eventual Selection isn’t simply about meeting strangers. The Emperor already knows each woman’s personality, talents, family background, ambitions, and strengths. The Coming-of-Age When the jade Emperor reaches adulthood and the eight Jade Daughters are old enough for marriage, the Jade Selection officially begins. At this point, the eight women are presented to the entire imperial court as adult candidates. The jade Emperor is permitted to choose his Empress from among the eight. But there is an unusual second part of the tradition. The Seven Imperial Matches Once the jade Emperor chooses his Empress, the remaining seven candidates don’t simply disappear from the palace. The Emperor personally determines suitable marriages for them. Will you become Jade Empress or will you lead a different fate Your choices will determine your fate.
