Character State Tracking Improved

Smarter state tracking is rolling out to TalesRPG — here's what it means for your adventures.

Every great tabletop campaign has two heroes behind the screen: the game master who spins the tale, and the meticulous friend who remembers that you picked up the rusty key three sessions ago. Until now, our AI storyteller had to be both at once — narrating your adventure while keeping the books on every item, wound, and hard-won trait. It did an admirable job, but sometimes things slipped: an item you used up or gave away would linger in your pack, and stories with lots of custom trackers — reputation, hunger, faction standing — were the most likely to drift out of sync.

So we gave the storyteller what every game master deserves: a dedicated scribe. Storytelling and record-keeping are now handled separately. While the narrator pours everything into the scene, a second specialist reads along and updates your character sheet with exactly what changed — nothing more, nothing less.

What you'll notice: your inventory tells the truth. Spend thirty gold at a market stall and your purse is lighter by exactly thirty; burn through your torch and it's actually gone; the cursed mark from the crossroads stays until the story itself lifts it. Stories with custom state benefit most of all.

There's a bonus, too: freed from bookkeeping duty, the narrator spends all of its attention on the story. Expect slightly richer scenes and sharper choices, especially on the smaller AI models.

The new state tracking is a server side update and is rolling out now. It applies automatically on all new story starts, existing stories switch to new state tracking when next chapter starts. Just play, and let the scribe worry about the rest.
