Improved Dungeons & Dragons mode

TalesRPG has been updated with an improved Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) mode. Dungeons & Dragons is a tabletop role-playing game where players create characters and collaboratively tell a story guided by rules, dice rolls, and a Dungeon Master. It focuses on imagination, strategy, and teamwork as players explore fantasy worlds, battle monsters, and solve challenges.

!!! For D&D mode to work properly, an app update is required !!!

The new update implements actual dice throws, character abilities, skills, health points, and armor class according to D&D rules. Previously, D&D rules were completely simulated by AI with TalesRPG RPG mode mechanics bolted on top; this led to an unfaithful implementation of D&D gameplay. This update lets the AI take the role of Dungeon Master and narrate the game, asking players to throw dice when an appropriate situation arises. Other things like health, skills, and armor class are also tracked correctly.

Dice Rolls and Ability Checks

When AI simulates dice rolls or ability/skill (skills are now called “abilities”) checks in the case of RPG mode, although it may seem fair in simulating chances, many times it is not. This bias is often affected by how the AI model is trained; for example, the **OpenAI **model in TalesRPG usually simulated successful ability checks even with low skills, whereas **DeepseekV3 **is not as optimistic. Also, how the story unfolded previously affects the chances of future AI “ability checks,” as AI is affected by previous prompt history. This is why ability checks in the case of RPG mode and dice rolls in the case of D&D mode are now fully simulated on the server side, with results passed only to the AI. As chapters progress, difficulty is also increased—this means focusing on certain abilities is important. This should lead to more unpredictable and varied stories. We would love to hear your feedback on the new changes!
